Turning fish into fashion Promoting Blue Fashion to support livelihoods in Kenya

The Nile perch fish harvested by vulnerable fishermen on Kenya’s Lake Turkana has long been processed into fish fillets, but the fish skin was largely discarded. Now that fish skin is being processed into fish leather in a factory in Kitale, leading to greater earnings for the fisherfolk and the villagers who process the leather. The leather was transformed into outfits and accessories by Kenyan fashion designers and displayed on the runways in Nairobi during the Blue Economy Conference’s Blue Fashion show co-organized by FAO to promote Blue Fashion for Blue Growth.
