As the world marks World Food Day, Nigeria outlines priorities, commends partners for support
Abuja - On Friday October 15, 2021 the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Dr. Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar held a ministerial press conference in Abuja as part of the activities for celebrating the World Food Day (WFD) 2021.
During the event, Hon. Dr. Abubakar outlined the various efforts by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in ensuring food security and nutrition in the country. He also appreciated development partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for their support in realizing that goal.
In his remarks at the event, FAO Representative in Nigeria and to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Fred Kafeero, said that WFD (October 16) every year is an important day since it is when FAO was born.
According to him, as a specialized Agency of the United Nations on agriculture, FAO is committed to support its member countries including Nigeria in improving agriculture and food production in order to achieve food security, nutrition for all and environmental sustainability.
Mr. Kafeero reiterated FAO’s commitment to continue part-nering the Federal Government of Nigeria and other part-ners to provide strategic support to development pro-grammes and strategies aimed geared towards achieving that goal.
During the press briefing, Hon. Dr. Abubakar was accompanied by the State Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Mustapha Baba Shehuri whereas Mr. Kafeero was flanked by FAO Nigeria Assistant Representative (Programme) Dr. Abubakar Suleiman and Programme Officer, SaAdiya Haliru
