Over 20 000 IDPs, host communities to benefit from inaugurated water schemes in Adamawa
Abuja - Over 20 000 internally displaced people and their host communities are going to benefit from five water schemes in Dong, Garkida, Koh, Kikang, and Tudun Wada Bazza communities in Adamawa state constructed through FAO’s technical support and funded by Eni, through its Nigerian subsidiary, Nigerian Agip Exploration with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation as the concessionaire.
A special event for handing-over and commissioning the water points was held on Thursday October 21 at Koh community in Girei local government area in Yola, Adamawa State and was presided over by the Adamawa State Government’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Maxwell Gidado and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Nigeria and to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mr. Fred Kafeero. Prof. Gidado represented the Adamawa State Executive Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
Others in attendance at the function included Adamawa State Government Commissioner for Water Resources, Hassan Kaigama, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs Dorathy Augustine and Girei Local Area Chairman, Judah Hamisa, among others.
Prof. Gidado said that the water project was one of the many interventions in the state that are supported by FAO and other development partners.
On his side, Mr. Kafeero pointed out that the project is geared towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those aimed at eradicating poverty; hunger; ensuring clean water and sanitation; climate action and on fostering public-private partnerships.
According to him, the use of water for domestic and agriculture needs of households is one sure way to achieve enhanced food security and nutrition and ultimately zero hunger.
