AMR as a Global Security Threat: Destabilizing Food Systems and Healthy Communities

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens stability in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) by destabilizing livelihoods, diminishing food security, and weakening health care systems. Though some progress has been made, more must be done to fully appreciate AMR as a global security threat.

Please join the CSIS Global Food Security Program for a discussion on the threat of AMR to global stability and food security with a keynote from the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries, Rasmus Prehn. A panel discussion including Rod Schoonover, Junxia Song, and other experts will follow, moderated by Caitlin Welsh. Rod Schoonover is the head of the Ecological Security Program at the Council on Strategic Risk and a former senior analyst in the U.S. intelligence community. Junxia Song is the senior animal health officer and AMR focal point for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO), where she leads the development and implementation of FAO’s action plan on AMR. Panelists will provide insights on how the U.S. government and allies can work together to address the increasing threat of AMR amid climate change and Covid-19 to safeguard global food security, even in the most fragile contexts.
