Day 2 of FAO Senior Leadership Mission in Washington, DC to meet with U.S. Agencies

8 June 2022, Washington, DC – During the second day of their mission, Beth Bechdol, Deputy Director-General, and Rein Paulsen, Director of the Office of Emergencies at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), met with key U.S. government agencies and partners during the second day of their mission to Washington, DC. Directors Bechdol and Paulsen discussed the global repercussions of the war in Ukraine and the need to work together to find and scale-up solutions to acute food insecurity around the world.  

At the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Deputy DG Bechdol and Director Paulsen met with Deputy Administrator for Resilience and Food Security Jim Barnhart, and Deputy Administrator, Isobel Coleman. They discussed the importance of scaling-up agrifood systems resilience as the number of hunger hotspots continues to increase globally through early warning and anticipatory action. They also met with Daniel Dieckhaus, Director for Humanitarian Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC).  

Deputy DG Bechdol met with Andrew M. Herscowitz, Chief Development Officer at U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) there they discussed key priorities of the Agency in the food security and agriculture sector.  

Over the next two days, Deputy Director-General Bechdol joined by Jocelyn Brown Hall, Director of the FAO North America, will be headed to Ottawa, Canada for their inaugural visit.
