FAO’s Director of Food and Nutrition Lynnette Neufeld Visits Washington, DC

14 October 2022, Washington, DC - Shortly after the White House Conference on Hunger, Lynnette Neufeld, Director of the Health and Nutrition Division (ESN) at Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)traveled to Washington DC for a week of meetings with US Nutrition stakeholders. 

Kicking off with a meeting at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Neufeld met with Cindy Long, Food and Nutrition Service Administrator followed by a conversation with Shawn Baker, Chief Nutritionist at the United States Agency for International Development.  

Neufeld’s discussion focused on the need to shift our focus to nutrition security and ensure not only that we are tackling hunger, but also that adequate micronutrients are incorporated into the diets of allThe meetings also covered the formation of a nutrition monitoring task force that FAO will engage in with the World Health Organization (WHO) to definthe core underlying principles of Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) on a global level along with indicators to measure progress for nutrition-related programs and projects.  

She later met with RDML Paul Reed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, where she noted how low- and middle-income countries are now dealing with the double burden of stunting and wasting as well as obesity. 

Neufeld’s day concluded on Capitol Hill, where she met with the offices of Representative McGovern and Senator Braun to discuss FAO’s work on nutrition, including the goal of implementing a nutrition lens throughout all of FAO’s work under the new strategic framework.
