Three-quarters of the world’s crop species producing fruits or seeds for human use depend, at least in part, on bees and other pollinators. Pollinators play an essential role in helping to feed a rising global population in a sustainable way, while also maintaining biodiversity and vibrant ecosystems.
However, bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly under threat from human activities. To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face, the key role they play for the future of food and sustainable development, FAO North America will host a twitter #BeeChat on #WorldBeeDay, May 20, from 2-3 PM EDT.
