Dear Readers,
Here in North America, autumn is around the corner, which means that harvest season is rapidly approaching for farmers. We hope for abundant yields around the world that will help improve global food and nutrition security.

For FAO and our partners, October means hosting and participating in numerous events where the future of agrifood systems and food security will be discussed. This “fall preview” edition of our newsletter gives an overview of the events that are planned and the information that you need to participate, either in-person or virtually.

World Food Day (WFD): Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind.
Date: October 16

Water is essential to life on Earth. It covers the majority of the Earth's surface, makes up over 50 percent of our bodies, produces our food, and supports livelihoods.  But this precious resource is not infinite, and we need to stop taking it for granted. What we eat, and how that food is produced all affect water. Together, we can take water action for food and be the change.

World Food Forum (WFF): Agrifood systems transformation accelerates climate action.
Dates: October 16 – 20

Organized into three interlinked fora - the WFF Global Youth Forum, the FAO Science and Innovation Forum and the FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum - the 2023 flagship event will leverage the power of intergenerational collaboration and creativity across policy, science, innovation, education, culture and investment. The goal is to forge new paths of action, impact and acceleration on the local, regional and global levels towards a sustainable, resilient, inclusive and hunger-free food future for all.

World Forum on Urban Forests (WFUF): Greener, healthier and happier cities for all.
Dates: October 16 - 20

Urban forests and green spaces are key components of sustainable and resilient urban development, providing a wide range of ecosystem goods and services. The aim of the Forum is to continue to highlight positive examples of planning, design and management approaches that cities with diverse cultures, forms, structure and histories have implemented to optimize the contribution that urban forests and green infrastructure can provide in terms of economic development, environmental conservation and resilience, improved social cohesion, and increased public involvement.

Borlaug International Dialogue/World Food Prize: Harnessing Change
Dates: October 24-26

Global leaders, experts, educators, students, and more will join the 2023 Borlaug Dialogue to discuss transformative solutions to achieve a sustainable, equitable, and nourishing food system. The theme Harnessing Change is a deliberate progression of the 2022 theme, Feeding a Fragile World. After focusing last year on the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, climate change, and conflict, we will focus this year on harnessing innovation, adaptation, and diversification to improve systemic resilience, recover from shocks, and sustainably nourish all people.

FAO will have a strong presence at this year’s Borlaug Dialogue. We look forward to welcoming Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol and Director of Innovation Vincent Martin to Des Moines, Iowa. Stay tuned for more information on our activities at this important North American event.

Stay safe, stay tuned.
