Actividades realizadas o en vías de realización The Scottish Waste Regulations, approved in May 2012, established a general obligation for food businesses to source-segregate the biodegradable waste they produce and make it available for separate collection and recycling. In addition, businesses are expected to present metal, glass, paper, plastic and food for separate collection by 1 January 2014. Most importantly, the regulations require businesses to prepare their food waste for recycling in authorized facilities. In this case, authorized treatment calls for processing, transformation or use as raw material in an authorized facility “other than incineration.” Big food businesses – those that produce more than 50 kg of food waste per week – are required to provide separately collected food waste starting from 1 January 2014. Smaller businesses – those that produce more than 5 kg of food waste per week – will follow starting from 1 January 2016. There are exceptions for food business located in rural areas and small businesses with up to 5 kg food waste production. Looking ahead, a ban on biodegradable waste landfilling practices will come into effect from 1 January 2021. Similar provisions had already come into force in 2009 in Ireland with the Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009 (S.I. No. 508 of 2009).
