Kyrgyzstan: walnut

Year of establishment: 2023

Character and comparative advantage: Walnut forests in Kyrgyzstan have social, economic and environmental value. Nearly 1 000 tonnes of walnuts are collected each year, with maximum 3 000 in exceptional years, with an average price of USD 2 per kilogram. Walnut production is an important income-earning activity for smallholder households, generating around 16 000 jobs. Walnut forests protect steep slopes, contributing to the preservation and regulation of water and soils. Thus, walnut forests are a nature-based solution for limiting soil erosion and boosting water conservation and climate change adaptation. Finally, walnuts are recognized for their nutritional value and health benefits. The nuts are rich in fibre, vitamins, magnesium and antioxidants.

Producing areas: Southern Kyrgyzstan has the world’s largest area of naturally grown walnut forests. The forests are located in wild and pristine mountainous areas, where no agrochemicals are used, and access itself for producers is a challenging endeavour.

Demands: Walnuts are demanded in both the local and export markets, including the European Union, China and the Russian Federation.

Consumption: The local population widely use walnut as a good source of protein, fat and vitamins. Walnut is also used in bakery and snacks production.

Beneficiaries: The main beneficiaries are local farmers and forests users.
