Highfields Institute

The Institute promotes and advances soil security through composting of manures and food scraps. The West Hill Farm Compost Demonstration and Research Site is a “living laboratory” where the Institute conducts research in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of compost management. The Institute’s aim is to reduce the costs and increase the value of producing compost on the farm.

Iranian Research Institute for Plant Protection

The Iranian Research Institute for Plant Protection (ex. Plant Pests and Diseases Research institute) presently comprises ten research departments with 32 provincial branches covering all agro-ecological zones and execute approximately 700 research projects per year. A major field of work is biological control.

Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center (LIHREC), Cornell University

LIHREC’s goal is to increase crop yields, improve quality, and decrease production and marketing costs while preserving and enhancing the quality of the environment.  Though LIHREC is not exclusively organic, the Long Island Organic Advisory Committee has been conducting research at organic farms and at LIHREC.  Some of the Committee’s research projects focus on disease management with compost teas and the effectiveness of rescue treatments with compost teas.

Pesticide Eco-Alternatives Center (PEAC)

Around the world there is growing recognition of the dangerous risks that the use of chemical pesticides pose. Pesticide Eco-Alternatives Center Yunnan Thoughtful Action (PEAC) was created in February 2002 to address this problem. The mission of PEAC is to reduce the use of harmful pesticides in China and to promote alternative ecological forms of pest control, and eventually protect the human health and ecological health for sustainable development.

The Puyallup Center has an on-going program on Organic Farming Systems and Nutrient Management.  The goal of this program is to build soil productivity, support local agriculture, protect water quality, and facilitate recycling of organic wastes.  The Program researches the effects of compost applications on nitrogen availability and soil properties.

The Rodale Institute is a US-based non-profit organization that aims to improve the health and well-being of people and the planet through organic agriculture research and training.  Most famous for the Farming Systems Trial®, a long running comparison trial on organic and conventional farming techniques, Rodale now engages in a variety of studies that focus on yield, soil fertility, pest and disease management and opportunities to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
