El Departamento de Horticultura de la UNALM reúne a profesionales dedicados a la docencia, investigación y proyección social en el manejo y producción de cultivos hortícolas, frutales y ornamentales, tanto en campo como en invernadero y vivero. El departamento cuenta con tres programas de investigación, para cada uno de los cultivos mencionados (p.ej. Evaluación de cultivares de Amaranthus hortícola de los Andes y del Asia bajo manejo orgánico).

DiSTA’s staff is involved in numerous collaborative efforts across various disciplines falling into six areas. The Agronomy and Crop Science Area provides statewide leadership in research, teaching, and extension in the subjects of crop production, sustainable agricultural systems and environment, soil physics, crop physiology, bioenergy and fibre crops, land management and use, applied plant ecology, weed biology, agrometeorology, agroclimatology, crop modelling, seed biology and production. "Environmental sustainability of organic farming" is one of the ongoing projects of the department.

The Department  deals with  the factors and technologies concerning herbaceous and tree crop production, through both the teaching and the research activities carried out by its staff. For its scientific activity the Department is structured into the  Agroecosystems Section and the  Horticultural and Tree Crop Section. The Department of Ecological and Sustainable Production Systems belongs to the Faculty of Horticultural Science of the CORVINUS University of Budapest. The main principal of Department of Ecological and Sustainable Production Systems is education. Ecological Farming is the topic of high priority in our Department, which shows the whole scale of agriculture to horticultural engineers. Besides education research work is also important in the field of Ecological Farming. The Department issues MSc and PhD topics in ecological farming for four years.

The University of Hohenheim has a long tradition of research and teaching in agriculture and natural sciences.  The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences has five research stations each with its own area of specialization.  The Crop Production and Crop Protection Station focuses on systems and process engineering, efficiency and productivity, as well as plant and grassland production.  The Plant Breeding Station focuses on certain grains, forage and energy crops.  The Horticulture Station focuses on vegetable cropping, orchards, and ornamental plants.  The Husbandry Station focuses on high-performance dairy production.  The Animal Husbandry, Animal Breeding and Poultry Production Station focuses on production methods, animal welfare, and environmental impact.

Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants, Julius Kuehn-Institute (JKI)

JKI is both a federal authority and research body for the German Government.  The Centre carries out a variety of research on cultivated plant systems and products at 15 different specialized institutes: Application Techniques for Plant Protection; Biological Control; Breeding Research on Agricultural Crops; Breeding Research on Horticultural and Fruit Crops; Crop and Soil Science; Ecological Chemistry, Analysis and Stored Products Protection; Epidemiology and Pathogen Diagnostics; Biosafety of Genetically Modified Plants; Grapevine Breeding; National and International Plant Health; Plant Protection in Field Crops and Grassland; Plant Protection in Fruit Crops and Viticulture; Plant Protection in Horticulture and Forests; Resistance Research and Stress Tolerance; and Strategies and Technology Assessment in Plant Protection.  Of particular interest, the Institute for Biological Control performs research on the use of natural antagonists to control arthropod pests and diseases and has produced a number of publications on the use of biological control in organic agriculture.

Freeville Organic Research Farm, Cornell University

The 30-acre farm serves several university departments, including Horticulture, Entomology, Plant Breeding and Plant Pathology.  Research includes trials on vegetable cover cropping, rotations, minimum tillage, pests and crop diseases, breeding lines with particular potential of production in the Northeastern US, and the effects of organic nutrient sources on soil quality to identity new strategies for vegetable production.
