QLIF was an integrated project funded by the EU Commission between 2004 and 2009. The project aimed to improve quality, ensure safety and reduce cost along the organic and “low input” food supply systems. QLIF included research, dissemination and training activities. Seven sub-projects were pursued: Consumer Expectations and Attitudes; Effects of Production Methods; Crop Production Systems; Livestock Production Systems; Design and Processing Strategies; Transport, Trading and Retailing; and Horizontal Project Activities.

FiBL is committed to the international development of organic agriculture through research and knowledge transfer. Based in Switzerland, FiBL has international offices in Germany and Austria and partners with organizations around the world. NEFG and the School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development at Newcastle University work together on organic agriculture and food research and provide advisory services to farmers, processors and consumers. Recent and current research on organics looks at a range of issues, including consumer behaviour, the role of economics and marketing, nutrition, quality, health, food safety, pest and disease control and food policy.

The Small Farm Program develops field and marketing research relevant to small- and moderate-scale farmers and then works to disseminate the information. It is not focused exclusively on organics, but conducts much work in the area. The Program has written several publications of interest to organic researchers, farmers and policy makers that are available on the website. These include research briefs on developing agricultural tourism; a guide called Postharvest Handling of Organic Crops; and a comprehensive seven-publication set on organic vegetable production.

NVI is a national biomedical research institute that oversees the areas of animal health, fish health, and food safety. In the past, the NVI has conducted research on post harvest strategies to reduce enteric bacteria contamination of vegetable, nut and fruit products, with a focus on the organic food chain.
