The Terrestrial Ecology Unit within the Faculty of Life Sciences focuses on research on the ecosystem dynamics of arid and semi-arid areas.  The Unit studies soil and below-ground processes with an emphasis on nematodes, protzoa, microarthropods, microbial ecoogy, and plant-organism relationships.

Faculty of Science and Agriculture, University of the West Indies

The Faculty of Science & Agriculture has departments dedicated to Animal Science, Food Production, and Agricultural Economics and Extension.  It also has a Cocoa Research Unit established to educate the international community about cocoa, its purposes, and the importance of preserving the cacao gene pool.  Specific areas of research include conservation, characterisation, evaluation, and utilisation of cacao.  The National Herbarium of Trindad and Tobago, also a research entity within the Faculty, aims to collect, preserve, understand and document the flora of Trinidad and Tobago.

Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants, Julius Kuehn-Institute (JKI)

JKI is both a federal authority and research body for the German Government.  The Centre carries out a variety of research on cultivated plant systems and products at 15 different specialized institutes: Application Techniques for Plant Protection; Biological Control; Breeding Research on Agricultural Crops; Breeding Research on Horticultural and Fruit Crops; Crop and Soil Science; Ecological Chemistry, Analysis and Stored Products Protection; Epidemiology and Pathogen Diagnostics; Biosafety of Genetically Modified Plants; Grapevine Breeding; National and International Plant Health; Plant Protection in Field Crops and Grassland; Plant Protection in Fruit Crops and Viticulture; Plant Protection in Horticulture and Forests; Resistance Research and Stress Tolerance; and Strategies and Technology Assessment in Plant Protection.  Of particular interest, the Institute for Biological Control performs research on the use of natural antagonists to control arthropod pests and diseases and has produced a number of publications on the use of biological control in organic agriculture.

Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA), Department of Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)

The aim of FERA is to support and develop a sustainable food chain and healthy environment and to protect the global community from biological and chemical risks.  Research on biopesticides is regularly included in their work on environmental risk assessment.  In 2009, FERA completed a project on biological pesticides for the control of storage insect pests.

Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre, University of Surrey

The Centre aims to understand consumer behaviour and food choice and to integrate the insights with knowledge of the biological sciences.  The Centre is not currently conducting research on organic agriculture or products, but previously undertook a three year study on consumer decision-making on organic products.

Foods for Health Institute and the Mitchell Lab, University of California-Davis

Researchers at the Foods for Health Institute have conducted research on the antioxidant, mineral and nitrate composition of organic fruit.  The Mitchell Lab focuses its research on phytochemicals and conducts comparative research on the nutrient and phytochemical content of organic and conventional fruits and vegetables.

Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG)

FORIG’s work is specifically focused on sustainable development of tropical forests.  The Institute conducts research and plays a knowledge translation role around sustainable development, conservation and efficient utilization of forest resources.  FORIG has recently worked on several projects focused on forest resources, agroforestry, indigenous and under-utilized tree species.
