Forestry Tasmania

Forestry Tasmania is the statutory body responsible for managing the forest land of the Australian state of Tasmania.  About half of the forest managed by Forestry Australia is available for sustainable timber production and 1% is produced under a chemical-free mandate.  The agency has a strong mission surrounding sustainable forest management and engages in a considerable degree of research.

Freeville Organic Research Farm, Cornell University

The 30-acre farm serves several university departments, including Horticulture, Entomology, Plant Breeding and Plant Pathology.  Research includes trials on vegetable cover cropping, rotations, minimum tillage, pests and crop diseases, breeding lines with particular potential of production in the Northeastern US, and the effects of organic nutrient sources on soil quality to identity new strategies for vegetable production.

Garden Organic

Garden Organic is an organic agriculture charity dedicated to researching and promoting organic gardening, farming, and food.  The charity’s International Development Programme promotes and facilitates organic agriculture in Africa, Asia and Latin America.  Its research activities focus on sustainable agriculture and agroforestry systems in rural, urban, and peri-urban farming systems in humid and sub-humid areas.

German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt fur Natureschutz, BfN)

BfN is the central scientific authority in Germany for both national and international nature conservation.  In addition to playing a role in the protection of biodiversity, the Agency is responsible for looking after the regulations of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in the European Union (CITES).  As such, the BfN plays an active role in national and international discussions around organic wild collection, which often includes aromatic and medicinal plants.

German Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture (DITSL)

DITSL aims to foster sustainable rural development in the Third World and countries in the process of industrialization.  The Institute conducts research in adaptive capacity to climate change, diversification of agro-ecosystems, urban food, and community based management of livestock.  DITSL is a non-profit company and is located within the Faculty of Organic Agriculture at the University of Kassel.

Gesellschaft für Arzneipflanzen- und Naturstoff-Forschung (GA) (Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research

GA is an international association of people interested in the advancement of research and science in the field of medicinal plants, natural bioactive compounds and phytotherapy.  In addition to supporting research, organizing meetings and fostering collaborations, the Society produces the monthly journal “Planta Medica: Natural Products and Medicinal Plant Research”. GA has a permanent committee on Breeding and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants. It does not have a focus on organic cultivation or collection, but scientists and institutions engaged in a wide variety of research that may include organics.

Ghana Organic Agriculture Network (GOAN)

Ghana Organic Agriculture Network (GOAN) was established in 1995 and is now the main grouping of organic NGOs and trade associations in Ghana. It brings together interested farmer groups, individuals, NGOs and institutions to enable them to share ideas and experiences. It has about 150 member groups and organisations, representing approximately one thousand individual members. GOAN comprises an organic agriculture resource centre in Kumasi and several regional sub-centres which provide information and advice, education, demonstration and training. Local centres have set up demonstration farms and gardens throughout Ghana to enable wider provision of information and training and to ensure maximum adoption of organic and sustainable farming practices. GOAN has facilitated and carried out many educational and training workshops throughout the country, at regional, district and village levels for farmers. It also has links with research institutes to examine alternative methods of pest control, particularly for cocoa, oil palm cotton, cereals and fruit vegetables.

Global Horticultural Initiative (GHI), World Vegetable Center

The World Vegetable Center, with its headquarters in Taiwan, hosts the GHI. This Initiative aims to increase economic opportunities and food security for the poor. The Initiative has a focus area dedicated to underutilised crops.
