Landscape and Human Health Laboratory (LHHL), Univerity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

LHHL is a research laboratory dedicated to studying the connection between greenery and human health.  It aims to increase the use of green landscaping to help individuals, families, and communities flourish and promote human health.  Researchers at LHHL are currently studying the effects of schoolyard nature on children’s learning and academic achievement.

Livestock and Range Research Program, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI)

KARI’s mission is to contribute agricultural innovations and knowledge towards improved livelihoods and commercialization of agriculture.  It aims to do this through increasing productivity and fostering value-chains while simultaneously conserving the environment.  The goal of the Livestock and Range Research Program is to contribute towards year-round availabilty of adequate balanced feeds and improved animal management to enable the sector to be economically self-sufficient.  The Program has sub-projects focusing on issues related to dairy, beef, sheep and goat, poultry, and camel.

Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (LI-BIRD)

LI-BIRD’s goal is to contribute reducing poverty and improving social justice by empowering poor and marginalized people to improve quality of life.  The organization aims to achieve this through participatory approaches to research and development on natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem services.  Activities at LI-BIRD fit into five programmes: Agriculture Innovations for Livelihood Security; Biodiversity for Sustainable Livelihoods; Ecosystems Health and Services; Policy and Social Research for Wider and Inclusive Impacts; and Knowledge Management and Capacity Building.

Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center (LIHREC), Cornell University

LIHREC’s goal is to increase crop yields, improve quality, and decrease production and marketing costs while preserving and enhancing the quality of the environment.  Though LIHREC is not exclusively organic, the Long Island Organic Advisory Committee has been conducting research at organic farms and at LIHREC.  Some of the Committee’s research projects focus on disease management with compost teas and the effectiveness of rescue treatments with compost teas.

Morarka seeks to catalyse, coordinate and facilitate participation of rural community members and entrepreneurs in agricultural innovation.  The Foundation emphasises research for technology.  A main focus area for Morarka is the research and development of vermiculture involving farmers.

Manor House Agricultural Centre (MHAC)

MHAC is a non-profit program aimed at increasing food security in Kenya by educating farmers in sustainable and organic farming techniques.  The Centre provides a two-year course in GROW BIOINTENSIVE, a low-cost agricultural technology suited to smallscale farmers.  It emphasizes compositing to improve soil fertility, mulching, biological controls to manage pests, and increasing productivity by improved spacing.  In addition to the training program, MHAC has developed mini-training centres in villages to provide information to women’s groups and farmers.

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)

MSC is an eco-labelling and certification organization for sustainable seafood.  Their standard is science-based and only applies to MSC certified wild-capture fisheries.  It was developed after extensive consultation involving more than 300 organizations and individuals world-wide and is based on the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.

Max Havelaar Foundation

The Max Havelaar Foundation, based in Switzerland, awards a Fair Trade certified label to qualifying products.  Fair Trade products are not necessarily organic, but if chemicals are used in their production, the quantity must be reduced each year.  The Max Havelaar Foundation is a strong supporter of organic cotton.

Medicinal Plants Conservation Network (MPCN)

MPCN aims to synergize the conservation efforts of various groups, including non-governmental organisations, government departments, companies and research institutes, which are involved in the conservation, cultivation and sustainable utilisation of medicinal plants.  The Network links Member organisations so that they may share information and collaborate on mutually beneficial research and outreach projects.
