Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC)

ARC is part of the Sudanese Ministry of Science and Technology.  The Corporation’s mission is to plan, develop and implement research designed to produce technologies and systems that are required to ensure sustainable crop productivity, food security, and export capacity.  The Land and Water Research Program in ARC aims to compact desert creep, erosion, and loss of fertility through the development of suitable technologies such as land preparation, irrigation, and fertilizer use.  The Desertification and Arid Land Research Program aims to establish a model for combating desertification and facilitating increased utilization of degraded lands to prevent rural to urban migration.  The Range and Pasture Research Program aims to conserve rangelands by improving feed for the national herd, reducing overgrazing, and conserving national resources.

Agriculture and Biology Research Division, National Research Centre

The agricultural Division is part of the National Research Centre, which is characterized by multi-disciplinary research teams, where problems can be resolved by the combined efforts of specialists from different agricultural fields to find the best solutions. The agricultural Division has many various groups of experts and specialists in all branches of agricultural sciences. Adoption of organic farming as a vital system for producing healthy food is one of the objectives of the Agricultural Division.

Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute

Agro Eco Louis Bolk Institute conducts research on organic agriculture, nutrition and health care and engages in knowledge transfer in Africa.  The Institute, which is based in the Netherlands, has two regional offices in Africa to engage in research and information dissemination around tropical organic agriculture: Eastern Africa (Uganda) and West Africa (Ghana).  Research at the Institute is divided into four thematic areas: Human, Animal, Plant and Soil.  Current studies include organic productivity trials using different pest and disease management strategies; organic cotton staple length trials; studies on organic livestock rearing techniques; research on the nutritional and health attributes of organic food; and work in support of organic social impact research.

Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD)

ACSAD works within the framework of the League of Arab States to unify Arab efforts to develop agricultural research in the arid and semi-arid areas.  The Animal Wealth Division of the Center aims to increase the productivity of small ruminants (sheep and goats) through genetic improvements, improving the productivty of indigenous cattle and camel, and improving the efficiency of the utilization of feed resources.  The Soil and Water Uses Division is concerned with identifying techniques for the optimum exploitation of soil and water resources.  This Division works to advance early detection and monitoring of the desertification process, prevent soil degradation, and establish soil databases in the Arab countries.

Auroville

Auroville is a 20 square kilometre city that aims at becoming a model of “the city the earth needs”.  At the time of the formation in 1968, most of the land was wasteland or under marginal agriculture that could only support a small population.  Since then, Aurovilians have been regenerating the land back to supporting productive agriculture by preventing soil erosion by wind and rain.  Land used for agriculture either produces mostly organically grown crops or is used for research on improving farm practices and diversfying planting patterns.
