Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources (ANSAB)

ANSAB is a non-profit, non-governmental organization working in the South Asia region.  The organization promotes community-based enterprises and value chains, natural resources management, and biodiversity conservation, especially for non-timber products and high value crops.  It is committed to biodiversity conservation and economic development through community-based enterprises.  ANSAB encourages organic certification for NTFPs in Nepal and has played a facilitation role in organic certification for NTFPs for various products, including 9 essential oils.

Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research (CPBR)

The mission of CPBR is to enhance knowledge, understanding, conservation and sustainable utilization of plant biodiversity in Australia.  The Centre aims to be a national centre of excellence in the fields of plant systematics and conservation biology, as a basis for the sustainable use and management and conservation of Australian vegetation.  Centre resources available online do not indicate a focus on organics, but, because much native vegetation is grown in the absence of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the work of the CPBR likely covers many organically grown products.

Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, University of California-Berkley

The Division of Organism & Environment within the Department researches organisms and their populations to understand origins, functions, diversity and sustainability to provide a basis for addressing existing and future challenges like loss of biodiversity.  Research areas include using ecological principles to manage sustainable agro-ecosystems that are both productive and natural resource conserving.  Current research projects include agricultural landscape ecology such as use of biological corridors in pest management and summer cover crops on pest populations.

Department of Natural Resources, Cornell University

The Department focuses on investigating ecological processes operating at the level of ecosystems and population/species and the interactions at both levels.  Ecosystem research within the Department looks at the forest ecosystem and responses to forest cutting; land-use changes; the impacts of the introduction of plants; and the maintenance of wetland biodiversity when land is used for agriculture.

Environmental Sciences Research Institute (ESRI), Shahid Beheshti University

Established in 2001, the ESRI aims to carry out research on the various aspects of the environment. Many qualified professors in Biology, Chemistry, Law, etc. at Shahid Beheshti University collaborate with the work of the Institute. ESRI offers Master and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Sciences. One of the research objectives of the Institute is studying economic factors related to bio-environmental research.

German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt fur Natureschutz, BfN)

BfN is the central scientific authority in Germany for both national and international nature conservation.  In addition to playing a role in the protection of biodiversity, the Agency is responsible for looking after the regulations of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in the European Union (CITES).  As such, the BfN plays an active role in national and international discussions around organic wild collection, which often includes aromatic and medicinal plants.

Institute of Organic Farming and Farm Animal Biodiveristy at the Agricultural Research and Education Centre (AREC)

The AREC focuses on sustainable agricultural management in rural areas in Austria. The Centre fuses higher school education with research in the areas of grassland and livestock management, plant production, holistic animal health, conservation of endangered farm animal genetic resources and organic legislatives. The Institute of Organic Farming researches organic grassland and livestock management and currently has projects on the impact of different grazing systems on the soil and the impact of calving season on milk yield.
