Mountain Agriculture Research Unit, University of Innsbruck

The Unit works to facilitate and increase research in all topics of mountain agriculture.  It is comprised of the research group of Rural Development and the research group of Agroecology.  Research includes work on food webs and nutrient cycles, biological pest regulation, the function of biodiversity in agriculture, the ecological effects of management changes, the history of agriculture, structural changes, driving forces in landscape evolution, the repositioning of agriculture in a changing rural society, and alternative income opportunities for farmers.

Mountain Forum

The Mountain Forum is a network of networks whose mission is to ensure that information to support sustainable mountain development around the world is generated, made available, and shared.  The Forum brings together over 3500 active individuals and organisations whose expertise is mobilised to support sustainable mountain development research, policy and implementation processes.  Mountain Forum maintains a membership database, global, regional and thematic discussion lists, an online library of mountain resources, a calendar of events, hard copy publications, and focused electronic conferencing.

Mountain Invasion Research Network (MIREN)

MIREN is a global programme aimed at understanding the problem of plant invasions into mountain areas.  MIREN features nine core mountain regions that participate in standardised baseline screening and monitoring in standardised comparative experiments.  These regions cover the major climatic zones and include island and continental systems.

Mountain Partnership

Launched after the UN World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002, the Mountain Partnership is a voluntary alliance dedicated to improving the lives of mountain people and protecting mountain ecosystems.  Presently, 50 countries, 16 intergovernmental organisations and 96 major groups (including civil society, NGO and private sector) are members.  The Partnership serves as mechanism for networking, communication and information-sharing.  The Partnership also complements, supports and strengthens on-going initiatives in sustainable mountain development.

Mountain Research Group, Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Researchers

Mountain Research Initiative (MRI)

MRI is a multidisciplinary scientific organisation that addresses global change issues in mountain regions around the world.  It is housed at the University of Bern and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.  MRI has very strong international alliances.  The Initiative has three elements: communication, framing the research agenda, and funding.

Mountain Research Station, North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

The Mountain Research Station strives to provide information addressing the diverse needs of mountain farmers.  The research program includes work with field and forage crops, horticultural crops, Christmas trees, burley tobacco and livestock.  In the past, research has been conducted around organic tobacco production.

Mountain Research and Development

Mountain Research and Development is an international peer-reviewed journal which publishes research on mountains and their surrounding lowlands.  It aims to develop scientific capacity, capitalize on development experiences, promote policy dialogue and strengthen networks within the mountain community.  The journal does not focus on agriculture, organic or otherwise, but does aim to present the best in recent research on and development approaches in the world’s mountain systems.  The journal is managed by the International Mountain Society (IMS).
