Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific

NACA is an intergovernmental organization that promotes rural development through sustainable aquaculture.  Its main activities include capacity building through education and training; collaborative research through networking among centres and people; development of information and communication networks; aquatic animal health and disease management, and genetics and biodiversity.  NACA has specific programs in genetic and biodiversity, health, inland aquaculture, marine finfish culture, and shrimp farming.

NewCROP provides an internet-based hub for information related to crop plants.  The site includes access to the Famine Foods Database.  This database provides information on plants that are not normally considered as crops, but are consumed in times of famine.

New England Regional Water Program

The New England Regional Water Program is a partnership between the USDA Cooperative Extension and land grant colleges and universities.  The Sustainable Landscaping sub-program aims for an approach designed to minimize the amount of water, fertilizers, and pesticides used.  Its research focuses on developing landscaping techniques including rain gardens, low-input lawns, and determining optimal amounts and timing of fertilizers that reduce runoff.  This Program also conducts educational and extension services.

New South Wales Department of Primary Industries

This Department is a research centre within the New South Wales Government.  The Fisheries and Ecosystem Research branch uses a holistic systems approach to develop profitable and sustainable primary industries.  The wild fisheries unit conducts research in fisheries technology such as fishing gear; fisheries biology such as life history characteristics; and fisheries assessments such as assessing the population-scale impacts of fisheries.

Nofima is a commercially oriented research group working on research and development for the aquaculture, fisheries, and food industry in Norway.  It conducts consumer and buying behaviour research on organic versus conventionally-grown salmon and other aquaculture products.

Organic Agriculture Program, Iowa State University

The Program’s mission is to educate producers, consumers and policy makers in the research activities in organic agriculture. The Program engages in both research and extension at its Neely-Kinyon Research and Demonstration Farm. Comparison studies are ongoing, with specific areas of focus on yield studies, pest and disease control, soil management, cover crops, and horticulture.

Organic Agriculture Projects in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria (OAPTIN)

In Nigeria, 80 scientists from different institutions have joined in OAPTIN, which acts as a cross institutional working group current working with capacity building of organic scientists through degree programs and training courses, strategic research activities in organic production systems, advocacy for organic practises, building partnerships with local and international scientists and practitioners.
