Plant Pathology Division, Department of Exploitation and Protection of the Agricultural and Forestry Resources (DI.VA.P.R.A), University of Torino

The Plant Pathology Division does research and teaching on biological and phytoiatric features of plant diseases. Its current research work concerns biology and epidemiology of fungus diseases of vegetables, ornamentals, crops and both forest and urban trees, molecular methods of diagnosis, physiological and molecular aspects of host-parasite interaction, unwanted side-effects of fungicides and fumigants and the development of ecocompatible strategies for the control of plant diseases. "Diseases in organic fruit production" is a current research project in the Division.

The mission of Wageningen University is to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life.  Plant Research International aims to develop new energy material from crops and optimize biomass for further processing.  It hopes to improve biomass via chemical, enzymatic, or microbial manipulation for food and energy applications.  It also aims to develop new ways of farming under new climatological conditions.

Post Harvest Grain Quality and Stored Product Protection Program, Purdue University

The Program is a collaborative effort between the University’s Cooperative Extension Service and the Departments of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Entomology, and Botany and Plant Pathology.  The website does not note any current research in organic post harvest processes, but the Program has engaged in research in the area in the past.

The Postharvest Technology Research and Information Center aims to reduce postharvest losses and improve the quality, safety and marketability of fresh horticultural products.  It is not currently engaged in work on organics, but has been in the past.

ProHuerta

ProHuerta is a program managed by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology of Argentina.  It aims to benefit impoverished peoples who lack access to a healthy diet.  It promotes a more diversified diet through small-scale farms in their households, schools, and communities.  The program provides training using the principles of organic agriculture, as well as offers support and biological inputs.  Their website is only available in Spanish.

Puyallup Research Center, Washington State University

The Puyallup Center has an on-going program on Organic Farming Systems and Nutrient Management.  The goal of this program is to build soil productivity, support local agriculture, protect water quality, and facilitate recycling of organic wastes.  The Program researches the effects of compost applications on nitrogen availability and soil properties.

QualityLowInputFood (QLIF)

QLIF was an integrated project funded by the EU Commission between 2004 and 2009.  The project aimed to improve quality, ensure safety and reduce cost along the organic and “low input” food supply systems.  QLIF included research, dissemination and training activities.  Seven sub-projects were pursued: Consumer Expectations and Attitudes; Effects of Production Methods; Crop Production Systems; Livestock Production Systems; Design and Processing Strategies; Transport, Trading and Retailing; and Horizontal Project Activities.

REDCAPA

REDCAPA is a non-profit Association of Latin American and overseas universities and research institutions concerned with teaching Agricultural Economics and Policies and Rural Sustainable Development. The network promotes South- South cooperation, produces a scientific magazine and two electronic information bulletins distributed to more than 10.000 professionals, runs a virtual library and data bases, redistributes scientific publications between its members and publishes teaching material. REDCAPA supports the exchange of lecturers and the preparation and execution of international joint research projects.

The Rainman Landcare Foundation demonstrates and teaches ecologically sound agricultural production methods and effective management and use of Africa’s scarce water resources. It supports the organisation of organic farmers into effective groups, helps them to develop markets, and has assisted in the establishment of independent organic certification agencies. It encourages young people to become organic farmers.
