World Food Day 2022 Celebrations - FAO Sindh

As part of the World Food Day 2022 celebrations, FAO-Pakistan’s Regional Office Sindh arranged multiple activities. These activities were planned keeping in view the theme for this year; “Leave no one behind; better production, better nutrition, better and environment and better life.

The activities started with a session with women farmers on the importance of milk as food. The session was held in district Tharparkar. They were taught on importance of incorporating milk in daily diets and how they could implement good hygiene practices while milking their cattle to save the milk from germs and keeping its nutritional value intact. They were also told to start preparing value-added drink that they could sell in the nearby markets and earn some additional income.

A significant part of the activities revolved around sensitizing youth on the importance of food security. In this connection, an event occurred at Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam with a walk with agri-graduates, a signature wall, a seminar, and speeches related to World Food Day. Later on, students displayed their project on food innovation and securing food from losses. Another event was held at Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness Management, University of the Karachi with agri-graduates. While, art and painting competitions were also held at various public sector schools in district Hyderabad.

To promote the indigenous culture and highlight the importance of food in our lives and how it connects families, FAO team in districts Sanghar and Umerkot hold awareness sessions and sensitized the farmers on importance of organic, indigenous and balanced food.

This year World Food Day was celebrated in the context of floods. Therefore, many activities were planned for raising awareness and sensitization in the flood-affected areas. A tree plantation drive was run and 400 high value fruit and floral trees including; Chiku, Guava, Lemon, Acacia and Moringa were planted.  Similarly, fodder was also planted in district Tharparkar. Farmers were also give awareness on harvesting and multiplying more varieties to avert the risk of fodder shortage for livestock in future. In the same context, farmers in districts Sanghar and Khairpur were sensitized on value-addition in onion and dates crop.

An activity was also organized an activity in district Mirpur Khas with the flood-affected children of the Temporary Learning Centre (TLC) established by UNICEF in the tent city. The activity's objective was to engage flood-affected children in recreational activities and give awareness about the importance of food and its role in achieving a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The children's response was very encouraging; they thoroughly enjoyed and participated during the activity.

Awareness was also done through participating in expos and food fairs.
