In an important event hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Pakistan, the Data in Emergencies Information System (DIEM) was unveiled, offering a unique and innovative solution for monitoring food security and livelihoods in the country.
The event, attended by representatives from UN agencies, different donors, and non-governmental organizations, highlighted the potential of DIEM in addressing pressing challenges.
DIEM, a dynamic data collection and analysis tool provides decision-makers with invaluable insights, especially in fragile and disaster-prone regions. Since its launch in June 2020, DIEM has conducted surveys in over 30 countries, reaching hundreds of thousands of households through the collection of primary data.
As the country faces multiple overlapping emergencies, DIEM will help in designing new projects based on concrete information supplied through the DIEM, to support the households affected by floods, droughts and other emergencies/shocks in Pakistan.
The results of DIEM's surveys are readily accessible on the Data in Emergencies Geospatial Hub, often referred to as 'the Hub.' This innovative platform provides open access to geospatial data and information products, shedding light on the dynamic impact of various shocks on livelihoods. Currently, it covers 27 countries worldwide, including Pakistan, and contains a wealth of datasets, analyses, recommendations, presentations, and reports.
These resources are derived from multiple rounds of assessments conducted in Pakistan to understand the nature of impacts on agriculture production, livelihoods, food security, and agricultural markets.
The event featured an enlightening tour of 'the Hub,' demonstrating its analytical capabilities using data collected in the most recent round of surveys. This also displayed how the floods of 2022 continued to affect farmers months after the disaster. In Pakistan, FAO, in collaboration with its partners, has conducted four rounds of surveys known as the Food Security and Livelihood Assessment (FSLA) since 2021. FAO is now gearing up for Round 5, scheduled for October and November, at a crucial juncture in the agricultural calendar.
