FAO's Vision for Pakistan: Transforming Agriculture for a Sustainable Future

20/11/2023

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has introduced a dynamic portfolio of 40 projects across Pakistan, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening the country's agriculture and food security. The initiatives range from enhancing productivity to supporting livestock and fisheries, addressing climate change challenges, and collaborating on policy development.
In an exclusive panel interview with the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), Florence Rolle, FAO Representative in Pakistan and Dr. Aamer Irshad, Assistant FAOR (Programme) outlined the proactive role of the FAO in numerous initiatives and programs aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s agriculture and food security sectors. They highlighted that FAO's priorities for 2023–2027 in Pakistan include improving food availability, climate-responsive planning, and agricultural value chains. Project selection aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, ensuring a consultative process and accountability through a robust monitoring system.
Collaborating closely with governments, academia, and NGOs, the FAO leads initiatives like the Living Indus project, focusing on youth involvement. Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in agriculture, efforts are made to attract them through modernization, specialized education, financial incentives, and technology adoption.
Despite agriculture's significant contribution to Pakistan's economy, challenges persist, especially for smallholder farmers. FAO aims to contribute to all Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on key sub-sectors within agriculture.
As FAO continues its initiatives in Pakistan, the comprehensive approach seeks to transform the agriculture landscape and contribute to achieving the SDGs.
