23/08/2024

In July 2024, significant changes in essential food commodity prices were observed in the districts of Umerkot and Tharparkar. An analysis by government departments involved in the “Strengthening Resilience of Agro-Pastoralists in Sindh” project, funded by the European Union and implemented by FAO, revealed notable price increases across wheat flour, basmati rice, and pulses.
Wheat flour prices rose by 4% in both districts, with Umerkot's price increasing from Rs. 84 per kg in June to Rs. 87 per kg, and Tharparkar's from Rs. 100 per kg to Rs. 104 per kg. Basmati rice (broken) saw a minimal increase in Umerkot but a sharp 17.7% rise in Tharparkar. Pulse moong experienced a 7.2% increase in Umerkot, while Tharparkar faced a more significant 14.6% rise. These trends reflect the influence of demand, supply dynamics, and regional inflation.
July 2024 marked a challenging period for both districts, with substantial price hikes highlighting the need for continuous monitoring and strategic interventions to support local communities.
