Distribution of Silos to Riverine Flood Communities in Dadu, Sindh

29/08/2024

Dadu, a highly vulnerable district in Sindh with the prevalence of a variety of hazards, frequently faces severe flooding, flash floods, and drought. For riverine floods, communities in the riverine belt (Kacha) are usually compelled to evacuate to safer locations. In the process, they need to transport their seeds and grains to protect them from damage. Unfortunately, these items are often stored in open spaces, exposing them to rain and adverse weather.

To address this issue, FAO, with the support of DG-ECHO, has provided movable silos to flood-prone communities in Dadu. These silos are designed to ensure the safe storage of seeds and grains during displacement. Each silo is standard-sized, with a capacity of up to 1000 kg, and features an airtight design. Lightweight and easily relocatable, these silos help farmers protect their valuable seeds and grains from weather-related damage.

A total of 400 silos have been distributed across five villages in the riverine flood-prone areas of Union Council Ameenani, Dadu District. Each silo costs approximately 19 600 PKR (around 72 USD). FAO has also covered the transportation costs, ensuring that the silos are delivered directly to each village.
These silos are instrumental in enhancing farmers' preparedness for floods and their ability to take proactive measures following early warnings.
