August 2024 Price Trends in Umerkot and Tharparkar: Key Observations and Implications

In August 2024, price trends varied in Umerkot and Tharparkar, as analyzed by government departments in the “Strengthening Resilience of Agro-Pastoralists in Sindh” project, funded by the EU and implemented by FAO.
Monthly price bulletins showed that wheat flour prices increased by 3% in Umerkot but decreased by 2.3% in Tharparkar. Rice prices fell in both districts, with basmati rice dropping 12.8% in Umerkot and 8% in Tharparkar.
Pulses, particularly moong, saw price increases, up 12.9% in Umerkot and 2.9% in Tharparkar. Tomato prices decreased significantly—by 30% in Tharparkar and 25% in Umerkot—while onion prices rose by 24.5% in Umerkot and 19.5% in Tharparkar.
Live chicken prices increased by 25.3% in Umerkot and 29% in Tharparkar, and egg prices rose by 11.8% in Umerkot and 16.2% in Tharparkar.
Fertilizer prices remained stable, with only slight changes from July 2024. The month’s price fluctuations highlight the need for ongoing market monitoring and strategies to ensure stability.
