LEAP3: road testing and dissemination of FAO LEAP guidelines

26/08/2019

The development of guidelines for measurement, reporting and verification of the environmental performance of livestock sector involves several technical decisions and assumptions that need to be tested in different situations.

This testing can ensure that the right balance is achieved between scientific rigor assessment and ease of use, while keeping in mind the capacity of both experienced and new users.

From technical dialogue on theory to technical dialogue on application and contribution to broad sector and national objectives, LEAP3 aims to collect feedback for the improvement of the technical documents and to boost the adoption and application of LEAP guidelines at various scales. The road testing activities will be conducted in different countries and production systems to ensure that FAO LEAP guidelines are applicable in different contexts.

The FAO LEAP Partnership addresses the urgent need for a coordinated approach to  develop clear guidelines for environmental performance assessment based on international best practices. The diversity and complexity of  livestock farming systems and environmental impacts can only be matched by the willingness of the sector’s practitioners to work together with stakeholders to improve performance.

FAO LEAP provides the essential backbone of robust measurement methods to enable assessment, understanding and improvement in practice.

The scope of FAO LEAP is not to propose new standards but to produce detailed guidelines that are specifically relevant to the livestock sector and to refine guidance concerning existing standards.
