Celebrating the alliances between parliaments and FAO

30 June is the International Day of Parliamentarism, and as we celebrate, we reflect on the importance of the partnerships between FAO and parliamentary networks in driving food security and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Parliaments play a crucial role in amplifying the perspectives and needs of individuals. Ensuring that the voices of their constituents are heard in policy decision-making, they are the bridge between parliamentary discussions and on-the-ground realities, helping ensure inclusive and participatory governance.

Partnerships with parliaments, parliamentarians and parliamentary networks are of vital importance to FAO’s work helping ensure food security and nutrition (FSN) in every part of the world.

Through our joint efforts with parliamentary networks, FAO has helped steer progress on more than 100 laws related to FSN, with a commitment to driving legislative change that contributes to sustainable development and the reduction of poverty. FAO-parliamentary partnerships have facilitated the development of laws and the implementation of policies that address key global challenges, and FAO and parliamentarians now engage in collective action through more than 60 networks worldwide, collaboratively addressing complex issues and working towards shared goals on FSN.

The First Global Parliamentary Pact against Hunger and Malnutrition, which was signed in June 2023 following the Second Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition, is one such example. The agreement underscores the vital leadership of parliamentarians – who serve as advocates for sustainable food systems, innovation, inclusivity and accountability in decision-making processes – and the power of global collaboration. By championing the fight against hunger and malnutrition, parliamentarians demonstrate their commitment to ensuring food security for all, leading by example and inspiring others to join.

As we mark the International Day of Parliamentarism, we celebrate the impactful work being done through the union between parliamentary networks and FAO.  By uniting parliaments with FAO's technical expertise and resources, we are driving change, empowering voices, fostering collective action and encouraging leadership.

Coincidentally, today FAO joins African parliamentarians gathered in Midrand, South Africa, to celebrate the official launch of the first ever Model Law on Food and Nutrition Security in Africa. This Model Law is the tangible fruit of a partnership between FAO and the Pan African Parliament, and will serve as a valuable guidance tool for every parliament and parliamentarian on the continent to combat hunger and malnutrition.

Together, through our collaborative partnerships and shared commitment, we can continue to make strides towards a more sustainable and food-secure future for all, leaving no-one behind.
