Strengthening livelihoods through control of Peste des Petits Ruminants

With almost 70 percent of the global sheep and goat population at risk of Pestedes PetitsRuminants (PPR) -Sheep and Goat Plague, significant efforts are needed to consolidate the livelihoods, nutrition and food security of millions of livestock holders, in particular in Asia and Africa. In this context, the project contributed to filling gaps in existing strategies for control of the disease and supported the formulation of new ones in West Africa, Central Africa, North Africa and Central Asia. It also reviewed and updated the subregionalstrategy for Southeast Asia.

What did the project do

PPR roadmaps were formulated, and accompanying workshops held, in all of the regions concerned by the project, namely Central Africa, Central Asia, West Africa and North Africa. Activities were carried out at national level with governments, with a view to securing their endorsement of National Strategic Plans for PPR. A Global Control and Eradication Strategy for the control and eradication of PPR was developed in consultation with international, regional and subregionalpartners and veterinary officers, and was presented and adopted during an international conference hosted by the Government of Côte d’Ivoire. The Global Eradication Programme is aligned with the Global Strategy.

Impact

The Global Eradication Programme is now at the top of the international animal health agenda, not least because of its linkages with crucial global challenges. In terms of the countries in which the project was implemented, a consolidated framework in some countries, and the foundations laid for a PPR strategy in others, will have a major positive impact on farming and, by extension, on food and nutrition security.

Activities

  • Subregionalworkshops and missions by consultants to establish consensus in target regions, with information and data collected for formulation of national and subregionalstrategies.
  • National workshops organized in Bhutan, the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and attended by 30 to 50 stakeholders from ministries and farmers/trade associations.
  • Regional roadmap workshops organized for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries.
