Forests cover just over 30 percent of the global land area, yet they provide habitat for the vast majority of known terrestrial plant and animal species. Unfortunately, forests, and the biodiversity they contain, continue to be threatened by illegal logging and land conversion for agricultural purposes.

On 9 December 2021, the Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism (FMM) launched FAO’s first-ever digital field trip targeted towards FMM Resource Partners - Belgium, Flanders, France, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. The virtual experience brought resource partners closer to the life-changing initiatives and real-world impact that they support through the FMM.

La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) ha acogido hoy con satisfacción la aprobación por el Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (FMAM) de cuatro proyectos que la FAO dirigirá en ocho países, cuyo importe total supera los 13,6 millones de USD.  La decisión se tomó durante la 61.ª reunión de la Junta del FMAM, su principal órgano rector, celebrada virtualmente.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) include some of the world’s most remote countries that share a similar set of challenges, including susceptibility to natural disasters, limited resources and dependence on international trade, in addition to a common aspiration for sustainable development, improved living standards and the remediation of gender inequalities. Women represent 52 percent of the agricultural labour force in SIDS and are essential agents of change to ensure a shift to more efficient and climate-resilient food systems.

La labor dirigida a ayudar a las comunidades rurales vulnerables de Somalia a alcanzar la seguridad alimentaria y fomentar la resiliencia al cambio climático ha recibido impulso gracias a una nueva asociación entre la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) y el Fondo de Qatar para el Desarrollo, la institución pública de desarrollo.

El Centro de Ayuda Humanitaria y Socorro Rey Salman (KSrelief), anunció el martes un nuevo y ambicioso acuerdo estratégico de cooperación de cinco años con la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO). El acuerdo compromete a los socios a ampliar la acción conjunta para atender las necesidades humanitarias, abordar las causas de la inseguridad alimentaria aguda y ayudar a las comunidades agrícolas en riesgo a reforzar su resiliencia ante las perturbaciones que socavan su potencial productivo.

Against a backdrop of conflicts and crises around the world, FAO and EU managers met to cement their alliance on humanitarian issues. Taking part in the discussions were the Director of the FAO Office for Emergencies and Resilience Rein Paulsen, the Director of FAO’s Liaison Office in Brussels Raschad Al-Khafaji, and, both EU Directors in charge of European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), Andrea Koulaimah and Andreas Papaconstantinou.

Radio programs give rural communities an opportunity for their voices to be heard. “I know that I am privileged to listen and follow different programmes aired through MVIWATA FM,” says Odilia Jiovin, a farmer from Kilosa District in the Morogoro region of United Republic of Tanzania, which is known for the production and marketing of sunflower, coconut, sugarcane and sisal. “I always take the initiative to share the information with my fellow farmers in our community and apply the knowledge shared through the radio on my farm, where other farmers come and learn too,” she says.
