This scoping study explores the resilience strategies of households in multiple livelihood systems by describing how households in Darfur have coped with conflict and other shocks over the past fifteen years. The study found that people actively select particular sources of income in a strategic pattern and move in and out of various income streams as the context and their assets allow to maximize their immediate and long-term outcomes while coping with and recovering from shocks.

Il analyse aussi l’expérience prometteuse de l'Observatoire des terres de parcours et de l'intégrité des couloirs de transhumance et commerciaux pour la mobilité du bétail en Afrique sahélienne de l'Ouest et du Centre. Des éléments de réflexion sur le contexte de fragilisation des droits fonciers des éleveurs en Afrique de l’Ouest et sur l’évolution du cadre juridique et institutionnel qui affecte le pastoralisme permettent tirer quelques leçons et formuler quelques recommandations.

Agro-pastoral dams (APDs) – water reservoirs constructed to provide water for livestock and for agricultural development – have been constructed all over Benin. These APDs face several conflicts (farmers versus herders, council versus vegetable producers, fishermen versus council, and fishermen and APD users versus crocodiles) rooted in the multi-functionality of APDs and the involvement of diverse stakeholders. Using the integral ecology framework as the conceptual inspiration, the research gained insights on: (i) the complexity of APDs that impedes agreement on common rules for their management, (ii) the way stakeholders frame the presence of crocodiles, (iii) the health status of the APD ecosystem by using water quality, fish diversity, and fish biomass as indicators, (iv) the constraints that hinder vegetable production around the APDs. The study suggests that an innovation platform should be established in which all the stakeholders can discuss changes, resulting in optimal use of APD ecosystem services and their management.

Sur initiative conjointe de la CEDEAO, du Gouvernement de la République du Bénin et du Réseau Billital Maroobé (RBM) s’est tenue à Cotonou, la Deuxième Edition de la Concertation de Haut Niveau sur la transhumance transfrontalière apaisée entre le Sahel et les pays côtiers.
L’objectif de la réunion était d’apprécier l’état de mise en oeuvre des conclusions et recommandations de la Session de Lomé, tenue en janvier 2015, et de dégager de nouvelles orientations pour une transhumance apaisée lors de la prochaine campagne.

How can education help build a stronger and more secure society and economy in Kenya’s northern arid lands? This study uses a resilience framework to ask how various education systems in the arid lands are helping or hindering young people and their societies to absorb shocks, adapt to and minimize stresses, and transform in positive ways when confronted with internal change and external pressures. The question is based on the concept of peacebuilding, in which it is assumed that people and societies are resilient when they accommodate adversity through complementary absorptive, adaptive and transformative capacities.

For centuries, pastoralists achieved a social, cultural, environmental and economic balance in these unpredictable ecosystems by developing highly adaptable and sustainable livestock production systems. However, pastoralists remain largely unheard and unseen due to their mobility with livestock in search of pastures, water sources and markets. The current dominant narratives on pastoralism fail to acknowledge their contributions to society, economy and environment.
This report highlights the benefits of pastoralists’ participation in society and vice-versa. It discusses the mechanisms to enhance pastoralist participation in policy dialogue.
