JKI's Institute for National and International Plant Health introduces quarantine pests and organisms which are likely to be spread via tourists. Amongst them are a fruit fly, a tiny worm (called nematode) or the dangerous xyllella bacterium, which has already killed olive-tree plantations in Italy. The JKI being the Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants investigates the dangers posed by such non-native species to our ecosystems. It reveals the pathways of their introduction, calculates spread scenarios, assesses risks and elaborates measures to prevent the entry and spread of invasive species. In its capacity as competent federal authority, the JKI fulfils numerous official task.
