Plant Production and Protection

Promoting home gardening practices for agrobiodiversity and nutrition

Wednesday, 18 October 2023 | 12:30 to 13:30 | German Room C269 (FAO, HQ in Rome)

Hybrid Event, 18/10/2023

Biodiversity plays a vital role in ensuring food security, sustainable agriculture, and the supply of essential ecosystem services. However, many key components of maintaining biodiversity at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels are at a decline. Biodiversity loss undermines the resilience of agrifood systems against climate change and hampers the ecosystems’ ability to act as natural buffers against climate-induced extreme weather events.

Addressing the interconnected challenges requires comprehensive strategies towards agrifood systems transformation but also small actions. Many emphasize the role of diversification, such as using multiple species and conserving habitat diversity, to protect biodiversity, promoting resilience, and supporting food security. One alternative to the public lies in the promotion of home gardens in urban areas as a means to enhance sustainable plant production on a small scale.

The side event is organized by NSP Youth Group. We aim to raise awareness of the critical role of biodiversity in sustainable plant production, the benefits and potential of home gardening, and to inspire and empower participants to start their own home gardens for agrobiodiversity and nutrition in the urban context. The outcome will be achieved through informative presentations and live demonstrations.
