FAO Food Loss App
(FLAPP)

Get actionable insights and expert advice on food loss from farm to market,
all through the power of data and community-driven solutions

The FAO Food Loss App (FLAPP) is a tool designed to help farmers, companies, producer associations, and cooperatives make informed decisions to reduce crop losses.

Through video advisories and data visualization, FLAPP provides analyses of losses and their causes—from pests and diseases to poor packaging and more—across every stage from harvest to the wholesale market.

By utilizing crowd-sourced information from farmers, FLAPP also enhances FAO's ability to analyze food losses directly from the farm level.

Discover FAO FLAPP

Currently reporting on 17 countries and 11 commodities, this dynamic app, with adaptive content, will continue to expand its coverage, both in terms of countries and commodities, as the user base grows becoming more specific and comprehensive.

With two account types, you can access information tailored to you. Producers can input their data to get automated loss results and solutions. Institutional Users can benefit from the app, whether they are researchers, survey takers, companies with contract arrangements with farmers, and more.

Knowledge for action: the benefits of FLAPP

Currently reporting on 17 countries and 11 commodities, this dynamic app, with adaptive content, will continue to expand its coverage, both in terms of countries and commodities, as the user base grows becoming more specific and comprehensive.

  • FLAPP increases access to information on losses for farmers, companies, producer associations, and cooperatives.
  • The app supports farmers in identifying the major reasons for losses and provide solutions based on scientific evidence.
  • FLAPP will enable the crowd-sourcing of information from farmers, enhancing FAO's ability to analyze where losses occur at the farm level.
  • The app will become more specific in terms of countries and commodities as the user base grows, with users providing information about the attributes of their specific commodities in their respective countries.

Insights into losses at the producer level

FLAPP focuses on losses at the producer level and highlights key stages: pre-harvest, left in the field, and post-harvest. The charts below depict the main causes identified at each stage across different commodities and countries.

In 2015, the United Nations and the G20 put food loss and food waste on the global agenda. While progress has been made since then, the scale of the problem persists because food loss and food waste are measured together, not separately. The paucity of data also poses a challenge.

In this paper, we try to understand what the maincauses of food losses (FLs) are. Our results show thatproducers' education and experience and the numberof years in which a producer has been involved in theproduction of a specific crop are significantly correlatedwith reduction in FL.

The essential first steps of addressing the problem of food loss are measuring the loss, identifying where in the food system it occurs, and developing effective policies to mitigate it along the value chain.
