Technical Platform on the Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste

Advances in Hermetic Storage for Smallholder Farms at the XXV International Congress of Entomology

Hybrid Event, 27/09/2016

The symposium will highlights research that deals with postharvest issues in the developing countries with a focus on smallholder farms. Storage losses to insect pests is a major challenge among smallholder farmers. Hermetic storage technologies including the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bag have shown to be effective in protecting dry cereal and legume grains against insect pests. Studies have revealed that farmers’ adoption of hermetic technologies
can increase income, improve food security and reduce health risks associated with the misuse of insecticides.
This symposium will consist of two sessions: 1) a series of oral presentations and 2) a poster session. Both sessions will highlight results on efforts to reduce or mitigate postharvest losses on smallholder farms.
