Governance innovation for sustainable development of food systems
The subprogramme supported Indonesia, Uganda and Tanzania in developing innovative governance mechanisms for better-coordinated interventions, policy integration and participation to advance agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets for all. It engaged a wide range of relevant ministries with responsibilities across different agrifood systems components, seeking to ensure the continuous participation of key national and subnational stakeholders for a sustainable, efficient and inclusive agrifood systems transformation.
In all three countries, the subprogramme deployed FAO multidisciplinary expertise to consolidate evidence, analysis, and technical advice related to agrifood systems. In Indonesia and Uganda, it assisted the governments with evidence from innovative modelling and analytical methods based on emerging sustainability science, providing a map of potential synergies and trade-offs across policies and interventions. The initiative contributed to advancing a common understanding among actors about the challenges and opportunities to achieve the desired transformation.
Funded by FAO's Flexible Voluntary Contribution (FVC), the subprogramme provided technical and financial assistance to host national dialogues organized as part of the preparations of the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), helping identify challenges and priorities at national and decentralized levels. The dialogues improved coordination among concerned national and decentralized institutions while engaging a wide range of actors. As a result, the three countries broadened their approaches to agrifood systems and are reviewing their national planning and sectoral policies and strategies through a systemic approach and related recommendations/commitments reflected in the national transformation pathways.
