Land and People in Protracted Crises. Building Stability on the Land. Guidance Note

This note focuses on the topic of access to land and land governance in protracetd crises, providing some possible solutions illustrated by case studies from FAO interventions in such contexts. Protracted crisis do represent a signal of alert on the fact that approaches proposed so far where not enough to deal with such a complexity. Not enough cross-sectorial, not enough inclusive and not enough able to create a sense of ownership by the concerned stakeholders. This is why a renewed thinking is needed, based on the concrete observations of local dynamics, making an effort to understand the positions and interests of [...]

This note focuses on the topic of social protection in protracted crises, presenting some possible approaches and its contribution to food security and nutrition, illustrated by case studies from FAO interventions in such contexts. The humanitarian system is currently at a critical turning point. No longer an exception, crises have become the norm across regions and are characterized by increasing complexity and recurrence. Moreover, despite the increase in the volume of humanitarian funding, there continue to be important shortfalls in meeting humanitarian appeals. The World Humanitarian Summit highlighted the urgent need to change the approach to addressing increasing humanitarian needs and [...]

Nutrition in Protracted Crises. Breaking the Vicious Circle of Malnutrition

This note focuses on the topic of nutrition in protracted crises. While malnutrition is one of the biggest challenges to development and human well-being in many countries, rates of malnutrition, especially stunting, are significantly higher in countries in the throes of protracted crises. Malnutrition and crises go hand in hand: malnutrition both impacts on and is affected by crises. Protracted Crises impact negatively on people’s lives and livelihoods and the factors responsible for malnutrition: food insecurity, inappropriate care and feeding practices, poor health environment. Nutrition needs to be integrated in resilience-building programmes to support a people-centred approach and build a bridge [...]

United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016-2025. Towards country-specific SMART commitments for action on nutrition

A common vision for global action to eradicate hunger and end all forms of malnutrition was defined by the ten commitments of the Rome Declaration on Nutrition and the accompanying 60 recommended policy options and strategies in its Framework for Action which were adopted at the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) in November 2014.  The next step is to translate selected policy options and strategies into country-specific commitments for action, in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and various regional strategic frameworks.

Influencing food environments for healthy diets

More and more people are becoming overweight and obese, with increasing diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Behind the global shifts in malnutrition and NCDs are unhealthy diets and a sedentary lifestyle. Our food systems and the food environments are not delivering on the diets needed to promote and sustain optimum health. This publication focuses on influencing food environments for healthy diets and offers suggestions on suitable interventions to address that environment. Countries will find the information useful as they develop policies and programmes to make healthy diets an easier choice for their citizens.
