17/03/2025

40 Parties and 3 non-parties to the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) together with regional fishery bodies (RFBs) met a year after the operationalization of the PSMA Global Information Exchange System (GIES), at the fifth Technical Working Group on Information Exchange (TWG-IE).

During the meeting, the participants discussed new functionalities of the GIES, increased global information sharing, and monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of the PSMA in fighting IUU fishing.

The meeting was held in Paris, France, between the 10–14 March 2025.

The TWG-IE is a working group established by the Parties to the PSMA to provide guidance on elaborating information exchange mechanisms and other technical matters, in the implementation of the Agreement. The TWG-IE is in charge of guiding the implementation of the GIES.

The PSMA is a binding international agreement that targets illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Its objective is to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by preventing vessels engaged in IUU fishing from using ports and landing their catches.

The fifth meeting, held with the financial support of the European Union, Iceland, the Republic of Korea, and France, convened a total of 87 technical experts from States, 3 regional fisheries management organizations, 1 RFB, and 2 non-governmental organizations.
