FAO trains 40 officers in Senegal

26/06/2024

Thirty newly recruited fisheries inspectors and 10 Navy officers are currently benefitting from a capacity building mission provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Dakar, in Senegal.

Under its project funded by Germany (GCP/GLO/1047/GER), FAO officers are currently providing training on the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea and several other international instruments addressing sustainable fisheries, including the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and complementary international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The training course also addresses the methodology and technical aspects of the role of inspectors in supporting sustainable fisheries.

This training course will be followed by additional training opportunities in Senegal, including on port inspection specifically for port inspectors.

FAO has an extensive global capacity development programme through which it provides technical assistance to support States in improving their capacities to fulfil their responsibilities under several international fisheries legal instruments. Training complements this global programme which focuses on policy and legislation, institutional setup and inter-agency coordination, monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS), enforcement and operational procedures.
