Accord relatif aux mesures du ressort de l’État du Port (PSMA)

FAO assists Panama in implementing the PSMA

27/11/2024

Three experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) were in Panama, between the 28 October and 1 November, to hold discussions with the National Authority for Aquatic Resources, in Panama City.

The mission, held through the European Union funded Sixth PSMA Global Capacity Development Programme Support Project, sought to support the country in implementing the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) and related international instruments.

FAO experts supported Panama’s government in reviewing the legal and operational aspects of the country’s management and technical measures, including Panama’s observer programme, fisheries traceability regulations and conservation and management measures in waters under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of Panama. FAO experts contributed to discussions and proposals for improvements to some of Panama’s existing rules and policy frameworks to be considered by the authorities.

FAO will continue to assist Panama in improving its domestic legal and policy framework against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing during 2024.
