New Vaccine and Market Development for Small Ruminant Vaccines at GALVmed
Sheep and goat populations around the world have been steadily growing and represent an increasingly important agricultural asset, particularly for the rural population in low- and middle-income countries. Despite this trend, animal health products, especially vaccines for small ruminants, are largely missing from animal health product portfolios available to small-scale livestock producers in Africa and South Asia. GALVmed has been working with commercial partners to fill these gaps and to provide to the market new mono- and multivalent vaccines addressing Brucella melitensis, CCPP, SGP and PPR. We will provide an update on ongoing vaccine development work and elaborate on the barriers to market that companies encounter when attempting to provide comprehensive solutions to assist small-scale livestock producers in managing small ruminant health in LMICs.

Pan African PPR Eradication programme and the control of other priority small ruminant diseases
African Union- InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) is a specialized technical office of the Africa Union Commission (AUC) whose mandate is to support and coordinate the sustainable development and utilization of animal resources to enhance nutrition and food security and to contribute to the wellbeing and prosperity of people in the Member States of Africa Union (AU). Among its many achievements has been the successful coordination of the eradication of rinderpest (cattle plague) leading to global eradication of the disease. Following the global eradication of rinderpest, Member States intensified the focus on peste des petits ruminants (PPR) as the next livestock disease for eradication from Africa and worldwide by the year 2030. The Pan African PPR eradication programme (2023-2027), developed under the GF-TADs Africa umbrella is aligned to the Global PPR Eradication Program (GEP) developed by FAO and WOAH; the two organizations that are leading the global eradication worldwide.

Research by PPR special prize winners- World Food Forum (WFF) and PPR Secretariat Partnership
A Transformative Research Challenge (TRC) is being organized as part of the “Innovation Lab” of the World Food Forum (WFF). Collaborating with WFF, through an EC funded project (GCP/GLO/091/EC), FAO aims to support research on innovative approaches for controlling PPR and improving small ruminant production along its value chain. The special prize Competition has a particular focus on Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), which is a highly contagious viral disease currently present in nearly 70 countries in the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and Asia where it causes annual economic losses of up to USD 2.1 billion. However, the control and eradication of PPR is technically possible if the resources are available for accurate diagnosis, surveillance, and vaccination, coupled with stakeholder engagement, political will, and advocacy. The special prize winners have been requested to deliver a talk on their research proposal that includes a brief description of how the project can contribute to the eradication of PPR.
