About the PPR Stakeholder Series
The PPR Global Eradication Programme Secretariat is organizing a monthly PPR Stakeholder Series to create awareness of ongoing PPR-related endeavours and their wide-reaching impact and the diverse stakeholders involved in these activities, highlighting how they contribute to the eradication goal. This 1-hour webinar will invite speakers from research institutes, non-governmental organizations, civil society, private enterprises, members of the Regional Economic Communities, and veterinary service departments, who are leading initiatives on the ground.
FAO’s effort to PPR eradication
PPR, also known as goat plague, is a highly contagious viral disease currently present in nearly 70 countries in the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and Asia. It primarily affects sheep and goats and can lead to high morbidity and mortality rates, with severe economic consequences, particularly on those whose livelihoods and food security depend on the small ruminants they raise. Following the successful eradication of rinderpest, FAO, in collaboration with WOAH and government counterparts, is contributing to the eradication of PPR by 2030 through the PPR Global Control and Eradication Strategy.
