While the global share of people living in poverty and extreme poverty have declined over the past three decades, almost one billion still live in extreme poverty and almost 800 million are chronically undernourished. 78 percent of those people live in the rural areas.  The FAO 2015 report on State of Food and Agriculture conservatively calculates that about 2.1 billion people receive some form of social protection. However, coverage is lowest in regions where poverty incidence is highest. In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia only about 20 and 30 percent, respectively, of the poorest receive some social assistance.
