CFS 40: Side event on Decent rural employment for poverty reduction and food security

10/10/2013

On 9 October 2013, FAO, ILO and Sida co-hosted a side event on Decent rural employment for poverty reduction and food security during the 40th session of the Committee on World Food Security (7- 11 October 2013).

The purpose of the event was to highlight the centrality of decent rural employment in reducing rural poverty and achieving food security. The panellists drew attention to the important role of the strategic partnerships between UN agencies, resource partners, member governments and national stakeholders. In particular, the panel underlined the longstanding collaboration between FAO and ILO towards promoting more and better quality jobs in agriculture and the rural areas. Some examples were presented including the joint Decent Work for Food Security Programme and a joint programme on youth employment creation in Zambia. The event highlighted the importance of discussing decent rural employment issues within the formal debate of CFS in the near future.

The high-level panellists at the event included (from left to right in the photo): Gustavo Merino Juárez, Director of FAO’s Investment Centre; Alette van Leur, Director of ILO Sectoral Activities Department; Rob Vos, Coordinator of FAO’s Strategic Programme on Rural Poverty Reduction (SO3); Nicole Franz, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and moderator of the event; Kayoya Masuhwa, Agricultural Attaché, Alternate Permanent Representative of Zambia and Mats Aberg, Senior Policy Specialist at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
