Innovative solutions to address and assess loss and damage in agrifood systems

This event will highlight the latest advances in climate science on loss and damage assessment and existing knowledge on farmers’ exposure and vulnerability that can inform climate change policies. Panels will illustrate methodologies and tools for quantifying loss and damage in agrifood sectors, innovative solutions for addressing climate impacts and how combined science and policy communities can support evidence-based decision making and link to concrete actions and international processes.

Janice Bailey is Scientific Director of the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Nature et technologies (FRQNT), Canada, which aims to promote research as a catalyst for well-being and sustainable prosperity and an accelerator for adaptation to the climate and biodiversity crises. After completing her studies, she was appointed professor of Agriculture & Food Sciences and adjunct in Medicine at Laval University. An active researcher for over 25 years, her research explored the impact of the environment on fertility and the ability to produce healthy offspring over multiple generations. She worked on a range of species, including bees, fish, agriculturally-important animals, humans, and even polar bears. Professor Bailey has been recognized for her research and leadership by several organizations. Notably, she was recently named a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for the Study of Reproduction and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Hon. Jullan Defoe is the Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy with specific responsibility for Fisheries and Blue Economy. Mr. Defoe has a master's degree in MS, Natural Resource and environmental management at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus. He was Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and Food Security since 2000.

Prof. Saleemul Huq is director of the International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and professor at the Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB), as well as Senior Associate of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in the UK.  He is an expert in adaptation to climate change in the most Vulnerable developing countries, he was a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and is also an advisor to the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Hon. Mia Mottley is the prime minister Barbados. Ms. Mottley is an Attorney-at-law with a degree from the London School of Economics, specialising in advocacy. She is also a Barrister of the Bar of England and Wales. In 2002, she became a member of the Local Privy Council. She was also admitted to the Inner Bar, becoming the youngest ever Queens Counsel in Barbados. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system, following constitutional changes she introduced that abolished the country's constitutional monarchy.

Dr Aditi Mukherji is a human geographer by training and holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. She is a Director, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Impact Action Platform of the CGIAR and is based in Nairobi. Aditi was Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) of the chapter on water in Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and a member of the Core Writing Team of the IPCC AR6 synthesis report. Her areas of expertise are climate change adaptation in agri-food systems, groundwater governance, the energy-irrigation nexus, and institutions and policies for a just climate transition.   

President of the World Farmers' Organization (WFO) since June 2022, Arnold Puech d'Alissac is a family farmer from the Normandy region, , who runs a farm producing free-range poultry, beef cattle and various crops. Arnold Puech d'Alissac has always dedicated his life to the defense of farmers nationally, regionally and globally. His strong commitment and sense of responsibility to the farming community began during his role as president of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA). He represented the European constituency on the WFO Board of Directors from 2017 to 2022, holding the positions of Treasurer and Vice President of the Organization.

Musa Sowe, is the president of the National Coordinating Organization of Farmers in The Gambia (NACOFAG), elected during the 3rd national congress. He served as interim director of the National Youth Association for Food Security (NaYaFS), is now the president of the National Coordinating Organization of Farmers in The Gambia (NACOFAG). He aims at the promotion and advancement of family farming initiatives at the national level; the promotion of farmers' economic initiatives; the enhancement of youth entrepreneurial developmentand  farm enterprise development; the promotion of agro-ecology and agro-forestry development with increased attention to climate resilience and indigenous knowledge.
