16/07/2024

The 8th Mediterranean Forest Week (8MFW) has officially opened its registration! Enroll now and be part of an event that brings together researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to debate the future of Mediterranean forests.

Hosted in the stunning Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this flagship Mediterranean forest networking event takes place from 4 – 8 November in Barcelona. Organised by the Joint Organising Committee (JOC), which includes 15 diverse organisations led by the FAO Committee of Mediterranean Forestry Questions – Silva Mediterranea, and the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Facility (EFIMED), the event promises a rich and engaging programme.

Programme

The programme includes six plenary sessions, with panel discussions and associated posters, each preceded by preparatory webinars. 8MFW topics are:

  • Building resilience: restoration strategies and policies for Mediterranean forest ecosystems.
  • Wildfire prevention and post-fire restoration.
  • Mediterranean forest biodiversity.
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation in Mediterranean forests.
  • Green cities for adaptation and resilience: co-benefits for human health, environment, and society.
  • Forest-related development cooperation and available financial instruments for the Mediterranean.

8MFW is committed to providing opportunities for youth participation to this high-level networking event, to address the challenges faced by this stakeholder group in the Mediterranean basin, such as unemployment, high NEET rates, lack of financial opportunities, and lack of inclusion and participation in local and international decision-making. A second Youth Dialogue takes place on 4 November, building on the 7MFW youth dialogue held in Türkiye in 2022. It revisits the five key themes, highlighted by young people as the main challenges faced in the Mediterranean forest sector, with a strong focus on restoration.

Between sessions, attendees can explore the 8MFW poster gallery for deeper insights into the event’s six topics. Additionally, several side events will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, where specific issues related to the plenary sessions will be explored in depth. The 25th  session of the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions - Silva Mediterranea, by invitation only, takes place on 7 and 8 November.

One of the highlights of the 8MFW are the field trips, which take place on Wednesday 6 November, offering attendees the opportunity to explore critical forest issues, such as wildfires and ecosystem degradation, and local initiatives to address them.

Networking

Finally, 8MFW puts a high priority on networking, and will be providing all participants with the opportunity to share their profile and work focus, both online and during the event itself. Stay tuned to explore the network of participants and find out who’s going so far!

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn, discuss, debate, and connect with professionals in Mediterranean forestry. Attend the 8th Mediterranean Forest Week and be part of the change. Be part of the future.
