CPF for Sri Lanka sets the path for FAO to transition towards more upstream assistance

Minister of Agriculture, Mr Duminda Dissanayaka on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka, and the Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for Sri Lanka, Ms Nina Brandstrup, have signed the new FAO Country Programming Framework (CPF) 2018-2022. It is a tool used by FAO and the Government to define the priorities of FAO’s assistance to Sri Lanka.

The new CPF is aligned with the Government of Sri Lanka Vision 2025 document and other national priority setting documents, the UN Sustainable Development Framework for 2018-2022 as well as with the strategic objectives of FAO, and takes account of the comparative advantages and capacities of FAO in Sri Lanka.

The five-year CPF sets out three government priority areas to guide the FAO:

1. Increased contribution of food systems to food and nutrition security and income generation

2. More sustainably managed natural resources taking account of climate change and increased resiliency of the most vulnerable to shocks, natural disasters and climate variability

3. Increased capacity of stakeholders to undertake policy formulation and to collect, analyse and utilize data and information for evidence based decision making.

Ms Nina Brandstrup noted that the CPF sets the path for FAO to transition towards more upstream assistance in building national capacities to make policy interventions in scaling up good practices and lessons learnt.

CPF for Maldives to focus on food production, climate resilient rural livelihoods and capacity building

The new FAO Country Programming Framework (CPF) 2018-2020 was signed by the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr Mohamed Shainee on behalf of the Government of Maldives, and the FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Ms Nina Brandstrup. The new CPF is fully aligned with the development objectives of the Government of Maldives as well as with the overall Strategic Framework of FAO and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2016-20.

The three-year CPF revolves around three country outcomes:

1. Food production contributes to shared prosperity and household wellbeing

2. Rural livelihoods are more resilient to climate change, and the environment and natural resources are more sustainably managed

3. Increased capacity of concerned stakeholders to collect, analyse, and utilize data and information.

Dr Mohamed Shainee, confirmed his support to the new FAO CPF and expressed his appreciation for the continued collaboration between his Ministry and FAO aimed at bringing technical knowledge and innovations to the country. Ms Nina Brandstrup noted that the CPF sets a path for the support of FAO to the Government of Maldives to reduce poverty and enhance food and nutrition security, while working to increase, diversify and add value to fisheries, aquaculture and agriculture while increasing resilience to climate shocks.
