The latest practical guide published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on "Fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) boat repair in the tropics," is now available in Sinhala and Tamil languages. This comprehensive guide aims to assist fishers in carrying out simple repairs of FRP boats, promoting longevity and ensuring the safety of fishers at sea.

FRP boats often sustain damages, albeit minor, which can be easily repaired with timely maintenance. The guide provides valuable insights on identifying specific damages, necessary materials and tools for FRP boat repair, recommended repair techniques, step-by-step procedures, and preventative measures to avoid further damage.

Prepared in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Programme Intergovernmental Organization (BOBP-IGO), this revised edition builds upon the 2010 Guide to simple repairs of FRP boats in a tropical climate, incorporating enhanced practices and knowledge. The latest version includes an additional section on damage assessment and repair options, along with more detailed information on materials and FRP repair techniques.

Thanks to the support from Trust Fund Project GCP/GLO/352/NOR, the guide is now available in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Sinhala, and Tamil. By offering the publication in Sinhala and Tamil, FAO aims to ensure that fishers in Sri Lanka and other regions where these languages are spoken can access and benefit from the valuable guidance provided.
