Workshop on strengthening the use of geospatial information for the production of SDG indicators

21/06/2022 - 24/06/2022

FAO, Digital Earth Africa and the UN Statistics Division are organizing a capacity-building workshop on the methodology for calculating SDG indicators 2.4.1 and 15.4.2 through the integration of statistical and geospatial information.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Digital Earth Africa and the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) are working together to provide capacity building to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) and partners through the UNSD-FCDO project on SDG monitoring.

This project aims to increase the availability, timeliness and disaggregation of national SDG data while integrating the use of new and innovative sources, methods and technologies following the Data For Now approach, and leveraging initiatives and innovations from across the global Statistical and Geospatial communities.

The Data For Now approach is oriented by a set of guiding principles, principally that the work is driven by the policy priorities and corresponding data needs identified by countries. Through consultations with NISR, SDG indicators 2.4.1 and 15.4.2 were prioritized to be produced for Rwanda using geospatial data sources and methods, with the broader aim of strengthening the use in geospatial information in Rwanda.

This development includes determining how to manage relevant geospatial information and identifying suitable methods for the production of SDG indicators, as well as broader considerations of what is necessary for the integration of geospatial data and statistics at the national level.

The SDGs Geospatial Roadmap[helps address these items, offering a basis to guide countries and their national institutions to collaborate and realize the immense innovative potential that geospatial information and its associated technologies can bring to the SDGs. The Roadmap aims to be a resource that helps enhance the awareness of geospatial information, Earth observations, and related data sources, products, tools, and methods that support SDG implementation. Developed by the Working Group on Geospatial Information of the Inter-agency and Expert Group on the SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) composed of experts from the global Statistical and Geospatial communities, the Roadmap demonstrates that geospatial information is now recognized and accepted as official data for the SDGs.

Within this framework, FAO and DE Africa and UNSD are organizing a capacity-building workshop on the methodology for calculating the selected indicators through the integration of statistical and geospatial information.
